With his helmet secured, troubleshooting gear in a waist pouch, a small sack on his back, and an unstoppable zeal, Madan Singh sets out on his bike to the office – a 13-mile – ride every morning. He arrives looking exhausted, but after a quick shower, he is at his desk, tackling tasks with the same ease as biking to office.
As Head of Administration at thyssenkrupp Uhde India, Madan oversees office facilities and more than 15 operational sites. A demanding role, but he thrives on the challenge. “This role is not just about services; it aligns with strategic business goals,” he says. Seeing administration as a crucial part of the bigger picture gives his work purpose.
Some days are stressful, but cycling keeps him going. Rain, winter or summer, he pedals to work undeterred. The thought of his ride gets him up in the morning, and no matter how overwhelming the day, the return journey helps him leave it all behind. Cycling bookends his workday, making it more fulfilling and ensuring his commute is time well spent.
Cycling is his passion, and it helps him navigate through his work. The concept of risk assessment, planning, and safety paramount to his role, finds its inspiration in his sport. These rides help him to tackle obstacles head-on, stay patient through chaotic and unpredictable Indian road traffic. He motivates his team not only in their work areas, but also on how everyone can make a small start to their well-being. “Cycling is about creating your own path at your own pace in a world that is always rushing”. And by encouraging his team to carve their own paths, he exemplifies what leadership is all about.
