Coke Dry-Quenching Plants

CDQ technology - a true innovation

Our proprietary Uhde coke dry-quenching technology focuses on optimizing the coke cooling process with the charging of hot coke and the discharge of cooled coke.

The shaft cover and transfer guide hopper are actuated by a simple mechanism driven by hydraulic motors.

An innovative dry sealing system is available for the shaft cover.

Cooling Shaft

The cooling shaft is distinctive in its rectangular shape and is clearly divided into a pre-chamber and cooling chamber, offering huge advantages over conventional round shafts.

Refractory lining

Conventional cooling shafts are structures consisting of refractory walls with a gas-tight sheet metal lining, where the refractory brickwork has to absorb all static loads. The Uhde cooling shaft, on the other hand, is a vessel lined with refractory bricks, which is suspended in a steel frame. The static loads are absorbed by the outer sheet steel walls and transferred to the steel frame. Therefore, the refractory lining does not need to absorb any loads.

This ensures high stability, easy maintenance and a long service life, resulting in reduced OPEX.

Cooling gas flow and distribution

Cooling gas flow and distribution

Thanks to the rectangular shaft shape and the symmetrical extraction of the hot cooling gas at the upper end of the cooling chamber, a homogeneous cooling gas distribution is achieved. This ensures uniform and controlled coke cooling with a cold coke temperature of <180°C.

Cooling Gas Distribution

Low exit velocities from the coke charge result in only fine-grained coke dust being entrained in the cooling gas; therefore, there is no need for a "primary dust catcher" upstream of the heat recovery steam generator inlet to protect it from being damaged by coarse dust.

Controlled coke discharge

Controlled coke discharge

Coke swing dischargers

The discharge of coke from the cooling shaft is precisely controlled by individual swing dischargers.

Variations in coke grain size distribution

Variations in coke grain size distribution within the cooling chamber have almost no effect on the coke cooling process. Bell-type charging system as well as a cooling gas by-pass to the hot gas duct are not required in the Uhde design.

30 years in operation without major maintenance or renewal of the cooling shaft refractory lining.
